Kida 39 - Heart of Atlantis

Geesh! It took me 2 (darn) weeks to finish this! I was working on other stuff, yes, but I was interrupted SO many times I nearly lost my mind. “Fix my computer, help me with that, internet in down again, I have trouble breathing”…

Anyway, I know I promised you a story behind each piece, but honestly I don’t have much to say this time (good, less wining and more art). I will say this though:

I LOVE “Atlantis – The Lost Empire”, it’s one of my favorite Disney movies, after TLM and Hercules.

Atlantis came out after Fantasia 2000, and with all due respect for Fantasia 2000, you could say 2 years have past since the last plot based animated feature from Disney. So I was really excited to seeing this one. Internet was already out there and I remember watching the trailers online over and over again. They were so dark, so full of mystery and action, I was like “AH! I gotta see this!”.

On that same relation as I mentioned before I love Kida after Ariel and Meg. I just love Kida’s design, her white hair (I love unnatural hair colors the most – red, blue, white, etc), her tough attitude and weird accent. In general I just LOVE the whole design and color keys of this movie (2 thumbs up for Mike Mignola). OMG most of the movie has my favorite type of Blue! Did I mention before that blue is my favorite color? Most of the stuff that I have is blue (when I can pick the color).

Anyway… this movie was a whole new thing for me regarding to Disney.
- It was the first one (after a series of) which was NOT a musical (I was actually disappointed at first, saying “what? No heroine theme song for me to hear over and over again”, but after watching it I agreed with the directors… like they even ask me ).
- Its design was so different from a classical Disney movie (excluding Hercules which also had a very unique design, but still) and so comics like!
- AND it was in cinema scope 2.35:1 which is my favorite film format and hardly used in animation (I guess cause you need to draw twice as much).
There could be more reasons I can’t think of right now (and I really want to post this already). Bottom line – this movie; plot, art and characters, was for me one big WOW!!!

This particular scene is my favorite one. I still get goosebumps when I listen to the soundtrack. When I saw it in the cinema it was like "OMG this is so amazing!". You could say this artwork is kinda retake of an old art of mine: fav.me/drqb7b I progressed a long way from back then...

I even cosplayed as Kida for the Jewish version of Halloween (called “Purim” if you’re interested). I improvised the whole costume! Bought a black wig and sprayed white color over it (yes, we looked all over town for a white long wig which was not for an old lady) causing the neighbors to come and ask what was this awful unhealthy smell. I went as kida and my friend as Milo. Sadly everyone thought he went as Harry Potter and they had no idea who I was – AND WE WENT TO THE PARTY AT MY ART ACADEMY WHERE I STUDIED ANIMATION FOR PIT’S SAKE!
Ok…ok.. I’m cool… sorry about that. And no! no pictures from that event! Too embarrassing (and low res).

Hmmm… so eventually I did have some stuff to say.
