~~~ Disney Moments: Hercules – A Big Pair of Goo Goo Eyes ~~~
(Created 09.10)
OMG this turned out too green… Princess and the Frog green! Sorry, I just hate green (too many bad memories related to green, long story). Notice that I almost never ever use green in my art, and even when I do, I add a little bit of blue to it. I tried like 5 times to change to colors to more blue-ish, but it just didn’t work with the shine I created. So I had to except the fact that although I hate green, it looks good on this piece. Oh well….
Oh, and ya – I used a bit of reference for the Background, mostly for the general composition and colors. And with a little bit of blur and focus tweaks I even hid those ugly brush strokes… Muahahahhah!
Anyhow, here’s my story this time:
-------
Megara, her friends call her Meg (or at least they would if she had any friends) was my second obsession after Ariel. Yes, she’s my second most favorite animated character of all times.
You have no idea how many times I’ve watched the Hercules trailer on the Hunchback of NotreDame video cassette!!! I knew it by heart, I think I still do. “I can handle it, have a nice day”, “Megara, my friends call me Meg”, “Thanks for everything Herc, it’s been a real slice”…. OMG!!! I was shocked! I was puzzled! Who is this tough, so NOT damsel in distress character??? And her voice! Susan Egan’s amazing and unique voice was… WOW! It just blew my mind off. I was NOT expecting THAT.
I just LOVE Meg’s design and I think Ken Duncan (Meg’s animator) did an AMAZING job with her entire attitude and body language. And what I loved more is the fact that although she seems hard to draw, I think I draw Meg better than any other Disney character I know to draw (Yes! Even more than Ariel). Maybe because she’s so unique it’s easier to catch her style, cause it’s so defined you know exactly how she should look.
I can draw Meg in my sleep. If you wake me up in the middle of the night (please don’t, I’m very cranky when it happens :-) ) and ask me to draw her, I would do it with one of eye closed! It’s no wonder that third of my gallery is filled with Meg’s fanart. I drew her all the time, and even more – she came to my life at a point when my drawings started to look bearable (from today’s point of view). So I was really having fun with her.
I have an obsession to eyes, noses and lips and Meg’s were SO awesome I still find myself doodling her eyes while trying to think or listen to something. If you tell me to draw and eye without thinking for a sec, her eye would be the first thing I’d drew. I just love the shape of her eye… you know what I mean, right?
And now we’re getting to her hair! YES! HAIR. Remember? I’m obsessed with long hair? (hmmm… reflecting back to what I wrote I guess I’m obsessed about a lot of things… I should probably get checked or something… back to hair-> ). So anyway, Meg is the only character I can’t really draw with her hair blowing in the wind. It just doesn’t work, because she has those twirling thingies and it’s so designed that even in the scene where she’s on Pegasus’ back asking Phil to help Herc (did I mention I know the whole movie by heart??) I guess the animators had a hard time figuring out how her hair should move.
So she will probably be the only (or almost only) “Disney Moments” character who won’t have her hair flowing nicely. So to compensate for that I made it nice, long and twirly just how I like it.
Bottom line – Meg, in my opinion, is one of the most interesting, deep (she was part evil!), awesome, cool, and with a very unique design, Disney heroines out there.
Thank you for listening and viewing my work.
Your humble servant,
Liron.
Wow. This takes me back to remembering seeing the movie Hercules as a kid. First off, I understand about being obsessed with certain parts of the body. Male or Female. It doesn't matter as long as it's good. For me, it's the eyes and hair; even though I'm a girl myself, but forget that! This is art! I like how you made this the same as the original, but with more amazement to the character everyone grew up with. Also, the light reflecting off the water and hitting Meg's body makes anyone stop and look at her in astonishment at the beauty. And let's not forget the hair and how the water if dripping off of it making it more catching to the eye for people to look at. And yes, one of my obsessions I love is long hair that blows in the wind. It's awesome so you can't blame me for that! Anyway, This picture makes anyone looking at it feel all warm and Nostalgic from the good old days of Disney and how awesome it was. I know it was for me.
